New Delhi:(Page3 News Network)-In recognition of the importance of energy access for sustainable economic development and supporting achievement and supporting achievement of the Millennium
Development Goals, the United Nations General Assembly has designated 2012 as the “International year of Sustainable Energy for All”. In support of this declaration, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India organized a two day global ministerial level international seminar on Energy Access. The seminar envisaged as an international platform for government, private sector, and non- governmental leaders to jointly address the goal of achieving Energy Access.
The plenary session was inaugurated by Prime Minister, Dr.Manmohan Singh on 9th October at Vigyan Bhavan. The seminar aimed to share and exchange experiences, best practices and innovative solutions on energy issues. About 30 countries participated in the two day seminar. Following outcome emerged out of the conference.
• Active involvement of developed countries for ensuring availability of energy access technologies, partnering in innovation and also for enhancing technological capabilities. Technological advances should be promoted through research and development, and strengthening of relevant regional, national and local institutions for sustainable development;
• International cooperation in developing and disseminating innovative energy access technologies and provision of new, additional and predictable financial resources and investment appropriate to the needs of developing countries; and
• Setting up an international mechanism to facilitate research and development in energy access and renewable energy technologies in the public domain to allow access to such technologies at affordable prices.
